Pillow Block Bearings

Mobirise

A Pillar of Industry

Pillow block bearings were first manufactured in Japan for shipbuilding industry in the beginning of the 20th century. Later the production of the bearing units began in Europe and North America.
Today, this type of bearing is produced by all major manufacturers of bearing products. Every major industry is using these bearings.

A pillow block (or plummer block) is a pedestal used to provide support for a rotating shaft with the help of compatible bearings and various accessories.

A Variety of Units

A pillow block may contain a bearing with one of several types of rolling elements, including ball, cylindrical roller, spherical roller, tapered roller, or metallic or synthetic bushing. The type of rolling element defines the type of pillow block. These differ from "plummer blocks" which are bearing housings supplied without any bearings and are usually meant for higher load ratings and a separately installed bearing.

Pillow block bearing units are used because they are easy to mount and easy to maintain while being relatively inexpensive.
